This Tissue Paper Earth is the perfect Earth Day Craft for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s easy and it promotes fine motor development and it’s a great activity to accompany a discussion about the importance of caring for our planet.
If you’re looking for last minute Earth Day Crafts for young children, this tissue paper Earth craft is terrific. It’s a quick and simple activity to do while you talk to your kids about taking care of our planet.
You an even do the little “question and answer” activity when your child has finished making his/her Earth, and record their answers on the back of the project.
Talking to Preschoolers about Earth Day
Before we began, I talked to the Hooligans about the significance of Earth Day.
We looked at a coffee table book called Heaven and Earth, which is filled with gorgeous photos of our planet taken either through a microscope or a telescope.
We studied the way Earth looks from outer-space, noting the greens, blues and whites, and talking about what each colour might represent.
We also talked about what we can do to take care of our Earth.
We talked about composting, recycling and reducing waste, and how we use our rain barrel for watering the garden, and we brainstormed lots of ways we can be kind to our planet.
And then the hooligans got to work.
Supplies for our Tissue Paper Earth Craft:
- Cardboard circles or paper plates
- blue and green tissue paper (cut into 2×2 squares)
- Glue
How to Make your Tissue Paper Earth:
I gave each child a round circle cut out of white cardboard and I supplied them with a bunch of tissue paper squares.
The kids brushed a layer of white glue onto their circles, and then stuck down their squares of tissue paper.
Some chose to lay their squares of tissue flat, and others crumpled their tissue paper before sticking them down.
Even the baby got in on the action.
Question and Answer Activity:
When their projects were dry, I asked the hooligans to think about what we had discussed earlier, and to name a few ways that they could help protect our planet and keep it healthy.
As each child gave me suggestions, I wrote them down on the back of their finished project.
Happy Earth Day!
