There’s no doubt about it, our regular 2 ingredient cloud dough is amazing for sensory play.
Recently however, we figured out how to colour our Cloud Dough, and even more recently, we tweaked that coloured cloud dough recipe to make it toddler-safe. This is great news because I often hear from parents who are concerned about their toddler playing with something that contains Baby Oil.
Well, you don’t have to worry about that anymore! The ingredients in this cloud dough are completely non-toxic and taste-safe.
Yay! Now, even the youngest hooligans can safely play with cloud dough now!

Hello,
an amazing picture, it immediately drew my attention and – I tried the recipe.
However, I made a mistake I hope other recipe users won’t repeat – I decided to use dried sweet paprika powder as coloring (I usually try to use as many natural ingredients as possible). It turned out looking just the same as regular play sand. 🙁 The kid did not even notice any difference.
Lesson learned: when I make cloud dough again (oh, an I surely will) I will stick to your recipe and use one of the fancy coloring options, apple green or blue, just like yours. 🙂

Can I skip the tempera paint powder? Will it affect the texture??
happyhooligans
It won’t affect it at all. It will be exactly the same! Go for it!

Will be trying this out tomorrow.. Would like yo know if I can use food coloring powder as i don’t hv tempura pain powder. Thanks
happyhooligans
Water based food colouring won’t work, unfortunately, as the oil in the cloud dough repels the water in the food colouring. Apparently there are food colours that you can by that are used in candy making – they’re oil based, and they’ll work. I’ve also been told the crushed sidewalk chalk will add colour to the cloud dough as well.

Looking to make a batch of this and cannot find powdered tempera paint locally and shipping is restrictive to an economic order. I can find lots of affordable pre mixed liquid tempera paints local and free shipped.
Has anyone tried replacing dry powder with pre mixed/liquid tempera paint? I figure it might not be great due to most likely being made from tempera powder and water thus would not combine nice with oil in cloud dough.
Anyone have feedback on using sidewalk chalk? Might try that or look for oil based food colouring powder as mentioned above.
Anyone else have tips, feedback or experience to share with alternate colouring sugestions or cheap sources for powdered tempera paint in Canada?

I wouldn’t add the liquid paint, as it will definitely change the consistency of the dough. I’ve heard great things about crushed chalk. Lots of people have told me they’ve used it. I’m not sure how vibrant it is though. I think the candy food colouring would be a great alternative. I’ve seen some blog posts, and the colour of the cloud dough looks really vibrant. As for the powdered tempera here in Canada, I’d check at a school/teacher supply store. I lucked out and found mine at a thrift shop. I’m not sure if Michaels’ carries the powdered stuff, but you could try there too. I checked Amazon.ca, and they don’t carry it, but the big jugs on this page at Amazon.com say they ship to Canada. Not sure how pricey that would be by the time you add shipping, but you can look into it: Name Your Link

Aaron, just click on the “name your link”. I didn’t mean for it to show up like that. lol

Thank-you for the reply. Used some sidewalk chalk today and worked fine for texture. Colour may be more vibrant with other solutions but definitely good in a pinch.
I think I will keep an eye out for cheap candy colouring or some clearence/used powder paint but for now the broken chalk shrapnel from last summer will do fine 🙂

What about olive oil?
happyhooligans
Sure, any oil will work, Melissa.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for this recipe. My 4-year-old and 1-year-old had a brilliant time playing with it. And the 4yo enjoyed making it too. We will use this many more times!
happyhooligans
Yay! So glad you tried it, and had fun with it, Jess!

I used Candy Coloring instead of the tempura paint. I couldn’t easily find tempura paint, but I also didn’t love the idea of my kiddos possibly eating paint! The Candy food coloring is oil based, so it doesn’t react with the vegetable oil the way water based food coloring will. I just mixed it right in with the vegetable oil and it worked like a charm.
happyhooligans
I’ve heard that works well!
