Make homemade gift tags for your Christmas gifts this year! It’s an inexpensive and fun way to make your gifts look great! Easy enough for kids to make but so charming, you’ll want to make a bunch yourself!
I’ve always enjoyed making my own gift tags at Christmas time. When I was a kid, my mom used to set me up with the pinking shears and all of the Christmas cards we’d received the year before, and I’d sit for an evening, and cut them into assorted shapes and sizes so we’d have a big stash of Christmas card gift tags to attach to our gifts when we were wrapping.
I was crafty even back then, so I loved being the official gift tag maker every year.
To tell the truth, until a few years ago, I was still making my own gift tags that way. I’ve resorted to buying them these past few years though because we just don’t get many Christmas cards anymore what with the increase in people sending their Christmas greetings via Facebook or email.
The trouble with store-bought gift tags though is that we often run out, or we can’t find them when we need them, and then we’re stuck.
So… imagine my delight when I received a gift last week with this little snowman gift tag on it.
I thought it was adorable and immediately started thinking of how we might make some similar gift tags here in my daycare.
Ahh, cookie cutters for starters, and the empty cereal box that just happened to be sitting on the counter. Perfect!
We ended up making a whole bunch of homemade gift tags that day and I hope you will too. Not only is it fun,
Making your own gift tags:

- means you never have to worry about running out of gift tags
- is an opportunity to repurpose a few empty boxes
- gives the kids an excuse to get crafty
- will keep the kids busy so you can focus on some Christmas prep
- adds an extra degree of thoughtfulness to a gift
Call the kids over to the screen, and we’ll show them how easy they are to make.
To make our Homemade Gift Tags, you’ll need:
- assorted Christmas cookie cutters
- cereal box
- hole punch
- ribbon or twine
Begin by placing your cookie cutters on the cardboard and tracing around your cookie cutters.
Next, cut out the shapes that you’ve traced.
Write your message on your adorable cookie cutter gift tag.
If you’ll be attaching your gift tag to a gift bag, punch a hole in the top of the gift tag and thread some ribbon or twine through. If you’ll be taping the gift tag to a present, there’s no need to punch a hole.
Now, get wrapping and attach all of your sweet little gift tags to your gifts.
Aren’t they just too cute too cute?
Homemade gift tags for everyone this Christmas!
