Looking for a fun and easy lunch idea for the kids? Try French Toast Nuggets! French Toast Nuggets are small, bite-sized nuggets of french toast. They’re dipped in egg and fried crispy-brown, and dusted with sugar and cinnamon. They’re easier for kids to eat than regular french toast too. No forks required! Just pick one up, dunk it syrup and pop it in your mouth! Mmm-mmm!

A Fun Recipe For Kids to Make
French Toast Nuggets are my kids’ favourite finger food. They’re little bite-sized pieces of french toast that are covered in cinnamon and sugar. There isn’t much that could make them better!
My kids absolutely love these. Not only because french toast nuggets are 100% drool-worthy (which they totally are), but because my kids actually make these little guys by themselves! (With a little help from mom for the frying part. ;))
My kids really can make this lunch with minimal help from me. They love being in the kitchen, and love it even more if they can make a recipe all on their own. Microwave Scrambled Eggs and Pancake Mix Muffins are two more of my kids’ favourite lunches to make.

Ingredients For French Toast Nuggets
(printable recipe below)
- 8 slices white bread
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 3 tbsp butter for frying
Cinnamon and Sugar Topping
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
*The reason we use white bread for this recipe is because it’s the squishiest. If you’d rather, go ahead and use brown bread. Just make sure it’s super-fresh.
Making Your Nuggets
To make french toast nuggets, bread is torn and smushed into balls. We usually tear a piece of bread into fourths, so four nuggets come from each slice of bread.
Next, eggs, milk, vanilla and sugar are whisked together. My son (4) can do this on his own as long as I set out the correct measuring spoons by each ingredient.
Then the balls of bread get dunked in the egg mixture. I take over here, and fry them up in a bit of butter.
While I am frying the nuggets up, my kids are making the cinnamon and sugar. I find it easiest to measure straight into a zip-top bag.
Once the nuggets are fried to a golden brown, I drop them into the baggie full of cinnamon and sugar. Zip that baby shut and let the kids shake, shake shake!!
Why Kids Need More Kitchen Time
Kids are learning and developing all the time! As parents, it is our responsibility to give them the opportunities they need to develop emotional, socially and physically.
Yes, messes are a given when kids get in the kitchen, but the fine-motor skills they get to practice are 100% worth the messes! You’d be surprised at how fast they catch on and how the messes get less and less every time they try again.
Not only are they developing skills (life long, important skills!) but this is a perfect opportunity for parent/child bonding.
My son loves to make recipes all by himself but he also loves for me to sit on the chair and chat with him while he is cooking. Sometimes we even turn on music and dance around as we help each other.
Give it a shot, let them try! Hey, they might love it and soon you’ll never have to cook another meal in your life. 😉
French Toast Nuggets are just one of our favourite kid-friendly lunches!

I was looking for an awesome recipe for the whole family and I stumbled on this article. I read and followed the instructions carefully and I made these french toast nuggets deliciously! Every member of my family is so happy! Thanks for this!

Good tip about removing the crust, Ana!
Marie
Can these be frozen and reheated?
Thinking they would be quick breakfast and I have a lot of bread to use up!
Jackie Currie
Oh, that’s a good question, Marie. I’ve never tried freezing them, so I can’t really say. You might try freezing a couple when you make them to see if it works, and then for future batches, make enough that you can freeze a whole bunch. Great idea if it works! Let me know if it does, and I’ll add a note to the post!
Christie
These were delicious! I used 4 slices of whole grain bread and 4 slices of Dave’s Killer cinnamon raisin bread. Also substituted the sugar with lakanto Monkfruit sweetener to cut down on the sugar.
Jackie Currie
Thanks for your feedback, Christie! I’ve never tried making them with anything other than white bread. Good to know about your substitutions!
Jackie Currie
Did you use fresh white bread, Jo? It should be nice and squishy so it won’t unroll.
Sunni
Has anyone tried these in an air fryer? Thanks!
Patricia
Delicious and easy to follow!
Jan
Has anyone tried using gluten free bread? I think the recipe sounds good but would have to use gluten free bread.
Israel
This recipe is really great tasting and nice to look at. Everyone loved it, but my complaint would be that a lot of kinds of bread do not fool or smash into balls easily at ALL. So you have to be careful to use soft Italian white bread. Another thing I tried that worked, was making French toast, ripping it into pieces, and then putting it in a bag with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Great tasting and would make a perfect sweet snack for movie time.

These are so good and quick and easy to make. I’ve made them a bunch of times and I’ve run out of eggs so I tried without eggs and it still works great
