This loom-knitted Homemade Coffee Cup Sleeve is fun and easy for kids to make. No knitting or sewing required. Crafted in less than an hour on a homemade loom, it makes a lovely handmade gift for kids to give to parents, grandparents and teachers.
Coffee cup sleeves, java jackets, coffee clutches, coffee cozies…. who knew they went by so many different names. Whatever you prefer to call them, if you’ve ever burned your hand holding a take-out coffee, you know how handy they can be.
No Knitting or Sewing Skills Required
I’ve seen a number of homemade, reusable coffee cup sleeves in my travels around the web, and I thought it would be fun to come up a version that kids could make to give as gifts – one that doesn’t require any knitting or sewing skills.

Guess what! It worked perfectly!
I simply cast on my stitches using some chunky yarn, and “knitted” a tube long enough to cover the middle section of a take-out coffee cup.
Voila… A pretty little coffee sleeve to tuck in your purse or leave in the car so it’s handy anytime you stop for a cup of Joe while you’re on the go.
Measurements/Sizes for Loom and Coffee Sleeves
I didn’t really plan my measurements or anything. I was just winging it, but here are some numbers for you in case you’re wondering:
Our bread crumb canister measures about 4 inches across the top.
That might seem a little wide, but the knitting slips down the inside of the canister as you knit, and it kind of tightens up as it grows. You’ll actually have to stretch your finished sleeve a little to slide your coffee cup into it.
Our finished pink coffee cup sleeve measures 3.5 inches in length.
Our finished blue coffee cup sleeve measures 2.5 inches in length.
I know I said there’s no sewing required to make our coffee sleeves, and that’s true, but because Valentine’s Day is approaching, I did backstitch a heart onto each of ours, using a plastic sewing needle and some white yarn. This step is purely optional.
What a cute, thoughtful and easy gift for a child to make for a coffee-loving parent, grandparent or teacher.
