Yesterday, we had quite the blizzard here. It was very exciting. The hooligans were running from window to window, keeping their eye on the storm and hollering updates every few minutes.
To celebrate, we had a mitten theme happening all day long. I made a mitten-match up activity which the toddlers and preschoolers loved, and we had a mitten lacing activity as well. We also made these adorable felt mitten ornaments for the Christmas tree.
For lunch, the Hooligans knew we were having French Toast, but what they didn’t know was that with all the snow coming down, and the mitten activities happening that I decided to make a mitten-themed lunch as well.
I used our mitten cookie cutters to make a lunch that would fit right in with all of the mitten activities we were doing.
How to make cinnamon-sugar french toast mittens:
By gently stretching the bread, I was able to cut two mitts out of each slice of bread.
Don’t throw out the left overs and the crusts! Put them in a baggie and store them in the freezer. You can use them the next time you’re making stuffing for a roast chicken or turkey.
While you’re cutting the mitten shapes out of your bread, melt some butter in a pan or on a griddle.
While that’s melting and getting bubbly, dip your mitts in a mixture of egg and milk.
For the perfect french toast, use 1/4 cup of milk for each egg.
Lay your dipped bread on the griddle and cook them slowly until they’re golden brown and crispy.
Flip them and do the same for the other side.
When they’re nice and brown on both sides, move them to a plate, and sprinkle them with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.Â
Serve them with a little syrup on the side for dipping, and you have the perfect winter lunch for a bunch of hungry kids.
