On this particular morning, the 3’s and I made several popsicle stick dolls, and I snapped lots of pictures of their little hands wrapping and winding, but as luck would have it, later that day, I discovered the memory card wasn’t in my camera. 🙁
Eight year old to the rescue! When Miss 8 arrived after school, and saw the popsicle stick dolls the preschoolers had made, she fell in love, and over the course of an hour or so, she made several of her own.
She had a whole family of popsicle stick dolls to take home with her by the end of the afternoon.
Let me show you how we made them.
To make our popsicle stick dolls, you’ll need:
- jumbo popsicle sticks (also known as craft sticks)
- scraps of yarn or wool
- small buttons
- permanent markers
- low heat glue gun
NOTE: I chose to use a low heat glue gun as opposed to a high heat glue gun so the kids could safely do the gluing.
How to make a popsicle stick doll
From your yarn collection, choose a “dress” colour for your doll.
Snip a long length of yarn from the ball.
Starting close to the bottom of the craft stick, begin winding your yarn around the stick to create the doll’s dress. Trap your starting piece of yarn in place by wrapping over it a few times.
Continue wrapping and winding your way up the stick, stopping an inch or so from the top, leaving space for your doll’s face and hair.
Cut your yarn, and secure it with a small dab of glue from the glue gun.
Now, choose a hair colour for your doll, and wrap that around the top of the popsicle stick. It can get a bit tricky up at the rounded top of the craft stick. You can dab a bit of glue there to keep the yarn from slipping off the end.
Once your doll’s hair is finished, use a marker to draw a face on the popsicle stick, and glue a few buttons down the front of her dress.
And that’s all there is too it!
Aren’t these little dolls adorable? And they’re so quick and easy to make!
Your kids can make a whole family to play with in no time.
Guaranteed, they won’t be able to stop at just one!
