Cardboard Gingerbread Star Ornament

With this pretty gingerbread star ornament, kids will cut their stars out of cardboard and paint and decorate them to look like a real gingerbread cookie. Great fine motor activity and a fun Christmas craft for children of all ages. Make our cardboard gingerbread man and house too for a matched set.

Remember last week, we were inspired by a store-bought ornament to make this gingerbread man and house ornament?

Well, welcome to Part 2 of that project!

That store-bought gingerbread man ornament came with a matching gingerbread star ornament, so we decided to make our own version of that ornament as well.

I love all the textures. The buttons and yarn, the stippled paint, the “icing and the “sprinkles”…

The sprinkles are just dots of paint, but if you want to get fancy, use glitter, sequins and craft gems like we did for these sugar cookie ornaments, or bits of yarn like we did for our cardboard Valentines cookies.

Cardboard Gingerbread Star Ornament

Supplies:

• piece of thin cardboard (i.e. cereal box)
• paint (red, green, and 3 shades of brown)
• paintbrush
• white yarn
• colourful buttons or sequins or craft gems
• glue or glue gun
• scissors
• metallic thread
• tape

Instructions:

Cut Stars:

Trace or draw a star (approx. 4 inches wide) on your cardboard. 

With your scissors, snip into the star (about a half an inch in) and cut out the center to make a smaller star. This will leave you with a half inch outline of a star and a smaller solid star. Tape the larger star together where you made the snip. 

Trim your smaller star to be a bit smaller yet so there’s a gap between the two stars when you put them together.

Paint:

Paint the stars a gingerbread colour and pounce on a darker brown and a lighter brown colour for texture and dimension.

Join Together:

Join the stars together with a bit of metallic thread and some tape or your glue gun.

Decorate:

Glue white yarn “icing” along the the front of the larger star,
and glue buttons or sequins or craft gems to the points of that star.

Dab the smaller star with a thick layer of white paint.

Use the handle end of a paintbrush to add dots of red and green paint to the smaller star.

Add hanger:

Glue or tape some thread to the back of the ornament for hanging.

Hang your adorable gingerbread star cookie on your Christmas tree.

Now, you can make our gingerbread man and house ornament to go along with your gingerbread star.
