Around this time of year, I become a little obsessed with gingerbread crafts, so the kids and I have made a lot of them over the years.

As you know, the inspiration for many of the Christmas ornaments we make here in my daycare come from the store-bought ornaments hanging on my Christmas tree.
One of my favourite store-bought ornaments is the gingerbread man in his gingerbread house pictured below. I’ve always thought that would be a fun ornament for the kids to make using basic craft supplies.
Last week, we did it, and I think the results were pretty darn awesome.
We used craft sticks to make the gingerbread house, and cut the gingerbread man out of a cereal box. Then we added texture with paint and some sweet details with cotton balls, craft gems, yarn and buttons.

- 5 popsicle sticks
- paint (we used 3 shades of brown)
- gingerbread man cookie cutter (not pictured above)

Gingerbread Man in Gingerbread House Ornament
- Cut out Gingerbread Man
Trace your cookie cutter on a piece of thin cardboard (we used a cereal box) and cut out your gingerbread man.
Paint your craft sticks and gingerbread man with a cinnamon coloured paint. Stipple on some darker brown and lighter brown to give the pieces some texture texture.
- Make House and Decorate
Glue your craft sticks together to form the gingerbread house.
Add some snow (stretched out cotton ball) to the roof of your house and decorate the sides and bottom with craft gems.
- Decorate Gingerbread Man & Poke Hole
Add details to your gingerbread man – painted face, buttons, yarn etc.
Use a thumbtack to poke a hole in the top of your gingerbread man.
- Join Pieces Together
To attach the gingerbread man to the gingerbread house, loop a piece of string through the hole in the top of the gingerbread man and fasten to the back of the house with your glue gun.
- Add Hanging String
Loop some string through the hole in the gingerbread man and glue (with your hot glue gun) to the top/back of the gingerbread house.
Hang your adorable gingerbread ornament on your tree!
Isn’t he just the sweetest?
