Avocados are my latest food-love.
I’ve always been crazy about the rich, creamy taste and texture of an avocado, but in the past, I’ve always used my avocados to make guacamole (get my fantastic homemade guacamole recipe here), or I’ve added them, thinly sliced, to salads, wraps, burgers and sandwiches.
I’d never thought to eat a plain avocado before, but one day, a month or two ago, I had a couple of avocados in the fruit bowl that were nearly past their prime. I decided to play around with a few ingredients to see what I could do with them.
Oh. my. goodness. !!!
There’s no turning back now. I’m seriously addicted.
With just a few simple seasonings or “toppings”, you can transform a plain avocado into a sinfully delicious lunch or mid-afternoon snack. You can even serve a barely dressed avocado as an appetizer in place of a pre-dinner salad.
Feel free to tweak this recipe and use your favourite seasonings, but this is exactly how I love my avocados best these days.
Mmmm…. So fresh and yummy!
I should add that I recently had a foodie friend over for lunch recently, and served avocados prepared this way. She went nuts for them, and is now serving them this way to her family and friends.
My favourite way to eat a plain avocado:
- avocado
- juice of a lime
- sprinkle of sea salt
- a few sprigs of fresh cilantro
You’re going to eat this avocado straight out of the “shell”. I love that the peel of the avocado serves as its own little bowl.
First, cut your avocado in half long-ways by running a sharp knife through the fruit vertically, working around the pit.
Split your avocado in half, and remove the pit.
Depending on how hungry you (or your guests) are, a single serving can be a whole avocado, a half an avocado OR, you can cut each half long-ways and eat/serve your avocados in quarters.
Squeeze a bit of lime juice into the hollowed out centre of the avocado (the area that held the pit).
Give it a good sprinkle of sea salt.
Finish by chopping a generous amount of fresh cilantro all over the top of the avocado.
I have to interrupt here for a sec to tell you about these AWESOME triple-bladed herb scissors. I love them so much. You can finely chop a whole handful of herbs in a matter of seconds with just a few quick snips!
That’s it: lime juice, salt and cilantro!
Now, grab a spoon and dig in.
Oh YUM!

Try pouring a little balsamic vinaigrette into the pit hole + a sprinkle of sea salt. 😀

Oh yum! That would be amazing!

Love eating plain avocado. Like to sprinkle a little lemon juice on for a little tartness.

I recently started to really get into avocado, because of all the health benefits. I have to say my most favorite way to enjoy it is just by itself. Plain and simple. Never saw the triple- bladed herb-scissors. How awesome!
