We got our first dusting of snow this past weekend, so these simple snowflake ornaments seemed like the perfect craft for our Monday morning.
- White cardboard
- Bernat “Pipsqueak” yarn, (you could probably use any fuzzy/fluffy, white yarn. This is just what we happened to have on hand here.).
- Acrylic craft paints (your choice of colours)
If you don’t have any white cardboard, you can slap a coat of white paint on the inside of a cereal box and you’re good to go.
I wanted our snowflakes to look very simple, so I went with this one.
Basically, I found a template that I liked online, and I traced it, leaving out any of the fancy bits. I transferred that tracing to my cardboard, and then cut out a number of snowflakes for the Hooligans to decorate.
I set out a selection acrylic craft paints in “icy” colours: a metallic blue, a cool blue and a frosty pink, and the Hooligans painted their ornaments.
While they were painting, I measured out a few feet of the yarn, and chopped it up into small pieces (1/4 to 1/2 inch lengths).
When their ornaments were dry, the Hooligans brushed and dabbed the front of the ornament with glue, and then pressed the bits of fluffy yarn into the glue. Some chose to simply flip the ornament upside down, and press it into the tray of yarn. That worked too. This is what we got!
Once dry, I punched a hole in the top, and tied a loop of metallic thread for hanging.
I really loved the frosted look that the Pipsqueak yarn gave the snowflakes. These are going to look pretty on the Christmas tree!

very cute! again!
if I’m allowed to ask, where in canada are you?
I’m in Ontario, about an hour East of Toronto. Looking to line up day-care for your daughter to be, Peggy?
awesome, thank you. don’t mean to seem like a creepy stalker, I’m just curious because I’m from canada too.
lol… honestly… I wish!!! … it’s unfortunate that you are SO far away from us.
I love love love your craft ideas. I have two kids and I provide daycare for three others part time during the week. We have done several of your crafts and can’t wait to try this one!
Very nice! and lucky you about first snow! We are still waiting for snow in the UK!:)
