Pretend play with artificial flowers – a fun Spring activity for the backyard:

pretend play with artificial flowers

Recently, the hooligans enjoyed a morning of pretend play with artificial flowers, and the activity was completely child-led. On Friday, the older hooligans ran out into the backyard, while I remained inside getting the little ones organized and ready to go out.

We were just inside the sliding glass doors, and as I was getting splash pants and rubber boots on the littles, I could see that one of the 3′s had a toy watering can, and he was scooping water from our pond, carrying it over to the garden, and pouring it on the tiny green shoots that are starting to peek out of the soil.

When we stepped outside, he ran to the sandbox, and grabbed a bunch of artificial flowers. (Don’t you love where this is going?)

Hang on, I have to tell you about our artificial flowers.

Artificial flowers for play:

Our artificial flowers are one of the most popular “loose parts” in our play space. I picked up several bunches of them at at a second-hand store a few years ago, and they’re used in some way every day.  From “weddings”, to decorating the playhouse and flower shops in the sandbox, our flowers are spark ideas for imaginative play every day. You couldn’t ask for a less expensive “toy”. Pick some up the next time you’re in a thrift shop or the dollar store and see what your children do with them at your house.

Back to our activity.  My little guy ran back up to the garden with his flowers, and I watched as he bent down, and twisted the bunch of flowers into the earth.  Then he ran back to the pond and resumed his watering duties.   pretend garden play

And that is how our morning activity was born. pretend play with flowers

Because I didn’t want the littles dipping watering cans into the pond (there’s just too much potential there for someone to end up going for a swim) I suggested that we get more of our artificial flowers and move them into some barren flowerpots.  pretend play - watering fake flowers

I filled (and refilled and refilled…) a large bowl and a bucket with water, and the hooligans spent the better part of the morning tending to their flowers.pretend garden play with fake flowers and watering cansIMG_7075

play logs

A few well positioned play logs or stumps add endless physical and imaginative play possibilities to your back yard:

Late last fall, my Dad, who has been in the tree business all his life, cut down a couple of massive Maple Trees for his next door neighbour. Now, I have to tell you that this was no small feat. My Dad is in his 70′s (his SEVENTIES!!), and there he was 70 feet high in these towering Maples, spurs on, ropes tethered, chainsaw roaring, dropping huge limbs and branches like he was a man half his age.

My Dad is honestly the most amazing man I know.

logs and stumps for play in the backyard

Dad admitted that this job was a bit much at his age, and that he wouldn’t take on anymore of this size.  I’d been pining play logs for a while, and knowing that this would his last big job, I asked him if he would set aside a few pieces of the trunk for me and the hooligans.  Being that it was so late in the fall, we agreed that he would just hang onto them until I was ready for them in the Spring.

IMG_6324My parents live just a couple of blocks away from me, and one night a couple of weeks ago, Dad pulled into the driveway with my logs in the back of his truck.  I was so excited, you’d have thought he was delivering bars of gold.

He and my oldest son used a fridge cart to move these 4 beautiful beasts into the backyard, and the following afternoon, on my day off, I got to work positioning them in the back corner of the yard, where we hooligans spend a great deal of our outside time.play logs by the sandbox - happy hooligans

To incorporate them into the area that most of the pretend play happens in, I positioned all 4 play logs beside the sandbox and playhouse. Three of the logs I placed upright and far enough apart that the hooligans would have to challenge themselves to step from one to another, balancing on the play logs

but close enough together that they could use them as a gathering spot to sit and chat, concoct great plans, and tell secrets.balance and co-ordination with play logs

The 4th log, I placed on its side to add a little variation to the set up. This one is the biggest hit with the jumpers.jumping off a play log

To stabilize the logs, I dug down into the soil a little and tossed in a little sand before positioning the logs for good. I stood on top of each one, rocking it back and forth, and making adjustments until the logs were completely stable. and there was no fear of a log rolling or toppling under the weight of the children.

Once all the logs were in place, I set out a few of our outdoor kitchen items; just enough to spark the imagination, and this is what the hooligans discovered when they arrived the following day. I love how magical and inviting it looks. Rather Alice in Wonderland, don’t you think?play logs in the mud kitchen

If you ever have an opportunity to score a couple of logs for your own backyard, jump at it! There are so many benefits to having a few of these in your outdoor play space.

They provide children with a natural place to climb and jump, and they help to develop gross motor functions.  Balance, co-ordination and decision-making skills all come into play when a child decides to take a step from one log to the next, and without knowing it, they take depth, distance, risk and their own abilities into consideration every time they climb up or jump down from one of the logs.

A log can also provide a place for a child to exercise his or her imagination and creativity:

One moment it’s a stage on which to perform,

and the next, it’s an instrument for making music.play logs - a place to make music

Ours are most often used as an extension to our play kitchen, play logs as a work space for childrenIMG_6661

and as tabletops for sorting “tools” and treasures on.IMG_6994IMG_6992

I can say without a doubt that our play logs have been one of the best backyard additions yet.

In the weeks to come, I’ll be following up several more posts, in what I’m calling my “Backyard Series”.  I’m really looking forward to sharing them with you, and passing along more simple ideas for creating a natural and inviting play space in your own backyard.

bug headbands

All you need for this adorable bug headband is a  paper bag and pipe cleaners:

simple bug headband cover photoThe other day we were playing outside, doing garden-type activities, and on a whim, I whipped up these simple bug headbands for the girls.

If you’ve been following along lately, you’ll know we’re all about paper bags and hats here at the moment.  We’ve used paper bags to make a gorgeous fairy tiara and an enchanting mermaid crown, so it made perfect sense to pull out a paper bag for this one too.

What you’ll need:

supplies for simple bug headband

  • paper bag
  • pipe cleaners
  • scissors
  • tape

How to make your bug headbands:

Cut a 1 to 1.5 inch wide, single strip from a paper bag.

Wrap the strip around your child’s head, and mark where the two ends join.

With some tape, join the two ends at the mark, and cut off any excess.  This will be the back of your headband.

Now, fasten your two pipe cleaners toward the front of the headband by simply folding them around the band, and twisting them in place, just like this:simple bug headband - pipe cleaners wrapped around a paper strip

Curl the pipe cleaners around your finger to shape the antennae.

Told you it was simple!

Banana-Graham Butterflies

Make snack-time fun with our Banana-Graham Butterflies!

butterfly snacks with banana, graham crackers and smarties

It feels like winter might well and truly be over, so we’ve been focusing on Spring crafts here.  We’ve made tissue paper butterflies, paper towel butterflies, butterfly magnets.  Last week, in keeping with our theme, I made these simple and sweet Banana-Graham Butterfly snacks for the hooligans.  They were easy to make, and the perfect treat for celebrating the arrival of Spring.

You’ll need:

  • one banana
  • 2 graham crackers
  • 2 chocolate chip “eyes”
  • smarties or m&m’s
  • peanut butter
  • antennae: toothpicks or coffee stir sticks

 To assemble your butterfly:

  1. Peel a banana and cut a slit into each side. With the tip of your knife, scoop out a small amount of the fruit.   Set the banana aside for a moment.
  2. Spread a small amount of peanut butter on each smartie, and stick them onto the graham crackers.
  3. Gently press each cracker into the sides of the banana.
  4. With a tiny amount of peanut butter, attach the chocolate chips to the front of the banana butterfly.
  5. Trim your antennae to about 2 inches in length, and pop them into the top of the banana.

Enjoy!!
